Late instar larvae search for a nice material to bore into when they are ready to pupate. Styrofoam is an easy material to use for this purpose. The larvae spit out the pieces of styrofoam while making their tunnel, creating a pile of 'styrofoam dust'. This dust can easily be sieved out from the ground cover (such as hemp fiber) together with the beetle frass when cleaning the enclosure. If you want to remove the piece of styrofoam altogether, it can easily be taken apart to ensure not a single beetle gets thrown away.

The styrofoam block is around 10 x 10 x 5 cm.
